Mornings in Vicenza

As the November dawn cracked with a cold, crisp whisper over Del Din, the USO volunteers stirred into action. They moved with purpose, their breaths painting misty swirls in the brisk morning air. Each of them carried boxes laden with the comforting warmth of coffee, the sweet allure of cocoa, and an array of breakfast snacks, destined to become small tokens of home for the soldiers. The volunteers were giddy with anticipation and a desire to show their appreciation while bringing a piece of comfort to those who serve. Soon, the soldiers began to emerge from their barracks, ready to embark on the day’s duties. Their faces are etched with the readiness that their profession demands, ready to face the challenges of the day. Those faces softened at the sight of the volunteers, and smiles replaced the seriousness. Hands stiff from the morning chill were warmed as they wrapped around cups of hot coffee and cocoa, each sip chasing away the chilly morning air. The air filled with the murmur of gratitude, interlaced with light-hearted banter, as cocoa-warmed bellies and snacks disappeared into pockets for later.
