Black History Month Celebration

On a crisp and sunny Thursday morning, USO Vicenza staff and volunteers partnered with V.W.O.C. (Vicenza Women of Color) to bring the community a Black History Month celebration. A special edition of Throwback Thursday Movie & Trivia featured the movie “Selma” directed by acclaimed director Ava DuVernay. This themed event included a Macaroni & Cheese Cook-Off by members of the Vicenza community, along with some other favorite African American treats. The festivities kicked off with an insightful moment to learn the significance of Macaroni & Cheese and how it was introduced to American culture by the enslaved chef of Thomas Jefferson, James Hemings. Macaroni and cheese became particularly popular during the Civil Rights Movement as it was seen as a symbol of cultural pride and identity.

With ballots in front of them, the panel of judges excitedly tasted each of the six entries. It was a difficult decision but after some deliberation, and many extra tastings, the votes were cast. The talented winner was cheered as she sprang up to the front to collect her prize with a big smile on her face. The center was decorated with artwork created by some amazingly talented members of the volunteer team and photos highlighting historical and current prominent African Americans. Patrons got to play games for prizes by answering trivia questions and playing ‘Name that Prominent Figure”. These cultural events are a great way to celebrate the diversity of the military and show pride in the community.
