USO Naples Brings Holiday Cheer to Troops Overseas

It was the night before Christmas as NSA Naples’ single and unaccompanied service members walked into the room, smelling the sweet aroma of candied yams with marshmallow topping and the savory smell of roasted ham and rosemary-seasoned turkey. Being overseas, the holidays are an extra special time for the USO, as not only is it the busiest and most magical time of year, but it’s one of the most important times to be there for the troops. Many Sailors are far away from their families – some for the first time in their lives – which is why it is critical that the USO provides comfort and support. This year, the Naples team invited all troops to a “T’was the Night Before Christmas,” holiday dinner so they could experience a bit of the holiday magic and nostalgia and know that community members and volunteers alike care and appreciate them.

The hospital galley was decked out into a winter wonderland with a Christmas tree adorned with lights, wrapped presents under the tree, a mailbox for letters to Santa, and individual stockings filled with classic American goodies for each Sailor to enjoy. As they entered through the door, they were greeted with classic holiday tunes, staff dressed as elves and reindeer, and smiling volunteers serving up traditional, favorite dishes. From roasted turkey and ham to creamy green bean casserole and freshly baked pecan and pumpkin pies – the feast was plentiful. As troops settled down with their big plate of homemade food, they were treated to a Christmas movie trivia competition and multiple rounds of raffles. Santa himself even made a special visit to share that, that year, every single service member present made it onto the nice list, and he was so very proud of all their hard work and sacrifice defending our freedom. Not a Sailor went home that night without a present and full belly, knowing that the USO was there to comfort and support them not just on this holiday, but every day.
