USO Vicenza September 11th Memorial Run
September 11, 2001, is a day that will always be remembered. The Vicenza military community came together to honor the memory of those lost and the impact on those left behind by this life-changing event. Participants from various brigades, families, military civilians, spouses, and retirees joined together at the starting line bowing their heads as a solemn blessing by the Garrison Chaplain was given. Next, Garrison Commander, Col. Gomlak provided inspiring words and a personal recollection of what he experienced twenty-one years ago on that day tragic day. Concluding the opening ceremonies, everyone began the run together, encouraging each other along the way. Throughout the course, along the main street of Caserma Ederle, spectators could clearly see that everyone ran this memorial run together for the cause, not as a competition, joining as one unit to overcome and remember this tragic day. Battalions ran together in formation and crossed the finish line all as one showing solidarity. As other runners finished the 5K route, many were thankful to see the USO and the humble volunteers ready with a cool beverage and healthy snack to energize them after such a meaningful run. Onsite, there was a beautiful memorial wreath, surrounded by seven banners, each displaying some of the 2,977 names of those who lost their lives. May they never be forgotten.
