USO Vicenza proudly supported the Memorial 5k for Derek Hines by serving energizing snacks and beverages and a much needed taste of home, which helped refuel patrons during this momentous event. Derek Hines was a U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant, part of the 2-503rd infantry Battle company, a West Point graduate, and completed ranger school before deploying to Afghanistan in 2005 to serve his country. During the deployment, Derek made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. In honor of his sacrifice, the Hines family created the “Derek Hines Foundation”; aimed at assisting families of wounded service members located in Massachusetts. The Hines Foundation President, and younger brother Trevor Hines, traveled to Vicenza, Italy to run alongside the current 2-503rd Battle company on Caserma Del Din as they host the 10th annual “Flag Day 5k”. Trevor spoke of the heroic deeds and characteristics of his older brother Derek in a compelling and motivating speech. Inspired by these words, various units and families joined together with cries of “Battle Hard” the battle company’s motto, to complete this 5k in honor of his memory. The outstanding USO volunteers were honored to be the force behind the forces, showing everlasting support to service members like Trevor Hines and the 2-503rd for their hard work and dedication as they honored 1Lt Hines and continue to honor the countless others that have made remarkable sacrifices in their lives. Once a Sky Soldier, ALWAYS A Sky Solider! Hooah!
