Sailor of the Quarter Goes on the Road

In Sicily at this time of the year there is an invigorating crispness to the morning air. Similarly, the exemplary performance shown by each of the Sailors/Servicemembers of the Quarter (SOQ) at NAS Sigonella is also invigorating, and their efforts are an inspirational example for others. Normally, USO Sigonella hosts a luncheon to help recognize these top performing servicemembers in a quarterly event that gathers them, their families, and their leadership for an awards ceremony. In light of the COVID restrictions during 2020, these events had to be cancelled, but USO Sigonella never gave up. The team worked with command leadership from NAS Sigonella to create “SOQ-on-the-Road”, bringing recognition straight to the office doors of the awardees.

These individual SOQ awards events started with the command leadership – such as CDR Ron Cappellini, Executive Officer of NASSIG and CMC Anna Wood – expressing gratitude for the hard work, accomplishments, and examples set by these servicemembers. Next, Center Manager, Brian Coyle, presented the appreciation plaques provided by the USO. Finally, the exclusive events were finished out with the awardees receiving a grab-and-go lunch that was prepared lovingly by USO staff and volunteers. One of the awardees, ET2 Garciaquintana, had this to say about what this event meant to him: “Being recognized for being good at my job is a great feeling. I am thankful for my peers and my leadership for always pushing me to be better. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.” The last of the 2020 “SOQ-on-the-Road” events will be completed in early December.
