USO Sigonella 2019 Volunteer of the Year: IT2 Nick Papanek

IT2 Nicholas Papanek arrived in Sigonella in August 2019 and almost immediately began volunteering with USO Sigonella. Since completing initial volunteer training in late August, he accumulated 140 hours of service before the end of the year. But selection as USO Sigonella Volunteer of the Year is more than just about the number of hours, though this effort on Nick’s part is impressive. Selection is also a recognition of demonstrated leadership, reliability and communications, a positive attitude towards service and the embodiment of the USO core values. All of these are qualities that Nick has consistently displayed throughout his service through the USO.

Nick is originally from Hoopeston, Illinois and is part of Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Sicily. He was previously recognized as the USO Sigonella Volunteer of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2019 and in the 18 weeks he has been volunteering, he has taken on more than 40 different volunteer shifts, including Rotator Flight Support (both the late night and early – 0330 – morning), office support, Troop Lunch Support, Family Game Nights, Holiday Programs and Waffle Sunday. A self-starter, Nick sees things that need attention and takes care of them without needing to be told, easily assumes leadership roles and has been a referral source for new volunteers. He consistently approaches others with a helpful smile and makes others feel welcomed.

Thank you, Nick, for all of your efforts in 2019 to make the lives of fellow service members and their families better, keeping them connected to family home and country while both they and you are stationed here in Sigonella, far from home. Your efforts are truly appreciated and are making a difference in the lives of others.
